Tally to Zoho Books Migration
Most Tally-to-Books migrations do not need every historical invoice to come across — and we will tell you that up front, even though a lighter migration is less billable work for us. Our default recommendation: keep your Tally licence as a read-only archive, migrate opening balances and your masters, and start the current financial year clean in Zoho Books. The full historical migration is available when the business genuinely needs it.
Our Honest Recommendation Before You Migrate Anything
This is the advice we give every client who asks about moving off Tally, not a disclaimer buried after the sales pitch.
We do not recommend migrating more than about three years of historical data from Tally into Zoho Books. The complexity of reconciling old invoices, stale vendor and customer records, and years of bank statements against a different system's logic becomes a genuine headache — one that costs more in reconciliation time than the old data is usually worth having live in Books. We say this even on projects where the bigger migration would be more work for us, because it is the honest answer.
What we advise by default
Opening Balances and Masters Only
- Opening balances as of your cutover date
- Your client list
- Your vendor list
- Your item and product master
You start the current financial year clean in Zoho Books, fully usable from day one, with accurate starting balances. Keep your Tally licence active as a read-only archive for anything older — a one-time lifetime licence has no renewal cost, so this costs nothing beyond what you likely already own.
When you genuinely need it
Full Historical Migration
- Clients and vendors
- Items and products
- Invoices and purchase orders
- Payments received and payments made
- Accounts receivable and accounts payable
- Bank account statements, mapped transaction-to-invoice
Real, sometimes unavoidable work — audit requirements, investor due diligence or multi-year reporting obligations are legitimate reasons to want it. We build it properly, including matching every bank transaction to the invoice or payment it actually settles, rather than leaving a pile of unmatched bank entries for your accounts team to sort out later.
Why Old Data Is the Expensive Part
Tax treatment and formats drift over the years
A five-year-old invoice was raised under tax rules and formats that have since changed. Mapping it cleanly onto Zoho Books' current GST fields is a judgement call on every record, not a bulk import.
Customer and vendor records go stale
Names change, companies merge, accounts go inactive. Old masters need manual review before they can be trusted as the basis for a migration, which is time spent on records you may never transact against again.
Bank reconciliation gets harder, not easier, with age
Matching years of bank statement lines against invoices and payments that were reconciled under Tally's own logic is manual verification work. A mismatch found three weeks back is cheap to chase down. One from three years back rarely is.
How the Migration Runs
Scope the cutover
We agree your cutover date, whether this is an opening-balance migration or a full historical one, and which financial year Zoho Books goes live for.
Clean and export masters
Clients, vendors and items are reviewed for duplicates and inactive records in Tally before anything is exported — migrating a mess into Books just gives you a tidier-looking mess.
Migrate and reconcile
Opening balances, or full transaction history with bank-statement-to-invoice mapping, are loaded and checked against Tally's own closing figures before go-live.
Go live and verify
Zoho Books becomes the system of record from the agreed date, with a validation pass confirming the opening position matches Tally to the rupee before you stop relying on it day to day.
Timeline. The recommended opening-balance migration typically takes a few days to a week. A full historical migration with bank reconciliation usually runs two to four weeks, depending on transaction volume and how many years of history are involved — the bank-to-invoice mapping is manual verification, not a bulk import, so it is the part that sets the timeline.
Self-Migrating vs a Managed Migration
| What you get | Self-migrate | With Skynetiks |
|---|---|---|
| Scope decision | Default is usually 'migrate everything' | Scoped to what the business actually needs, with the reconciliation cost explained up front |
| Master data | Duplicates and inactive records carried across as-is | Reviewed and cleaned before migration |
| Opening balance accuracy | Manually tallied against Tally | Validated to match Tally's closing figures before go-live |
| Bank reconciliation | Line-by-line, by hand, if attempted at all | Transaction-to-invoice mapping built and verified |
| GST configuration | Your finance team's problem to get right | Configured as part of the same project |

Tally to Zoho Books Migration — FAQs
Should I migrate all my old Tally data into Zoho Books?
Usually not, and we will say so even though a bigger migration is more billable work for us. Data older than about three years carries a disproportionate amount of reconciliation risk for very little ongoing business value — old GST formats, invoices against vendors you no longer deal with, and bank entries that were reconciled under assumptions nobody can now verify. Our default recommendation is to keep your Tally licence (a one-time lifetime licence, not a renewal), migrate only opening balances and your masters — clients, vendors and items — and start live operations in Zoho Books from the current financial year. Tally stays installed as a read-only reference for anything older.
What exactly gets migrated in the recommended, lighter approach?
Opening balances as of your cutover date, your customer list, your vendor list, and your item or product master. That is enough for Zoho Books to be fully usable from day one of the current financial year, with accurate starting balances, without re-keying or reconciling years of closed transaction history.
What if we genuinely need the full transaction history in Zoho Books?
We migrate it — clients, items, vendors, invoices, purchase orders, payments received, payments made, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and bank account statements with proper bank-transaction-to-invoice mapping so each payment reconciles against the right document rather than sitting as an unmatched bank entry. This is real, sometimes unavoidable work — audit requirements, investor due diligence and multi-year reporting obligations are all legitimate reasons to want it. We just do not default to it, because most businesses asking for 'everything' have not weighed the reconciliation cost against how often that old data actually gets opened again.
Why does old data cause reconciliation problems specifically?
Three compounding reasons. Tax treatment and invoice formats change over the years, so a five-year-old invoice may not map cleanly onto Zoho Books' current GST fields. Vendors and customers get renamed, merged or go inactive, so old records need manual judgement calls rather than a clean automated match. And bank statements going back years have to be reconciled line by line against invoices and payments that were themselves reconciled under a different system's logic — a mismatch found three years back in is far more expensive to chase down than one found three weeks back.
Can we keep using Tally after moving to Zoho Books?
Yes, and for the lighter migration we recommend it. A lifetime Tally licence has no ongoing renewal cost, so keeping it installed purely as a historical lookup tool — for the odd old invoice or audit query — costs nothing beyond the one-time licence you likely already own. Day-to-day accounting moves to Zoho Books; Tally becomes an archive, not a second active system.
How is GST handled for the opening balance and new invoices?
Opening balances carry over as totals, not as individual historical invoices, so GST treatment is not re-litigated for closed periods. Every invoice raised after cutover is created fresh in Zoho Books against your current GSTIN, HSN/SAC codes and tax rates, configured as part of the same project — see our Zoho Books implementation service for the GST setup this migration assumes is already in place.
How long does this take?
The recommended opening-balance-and-masters migration typically takes a few days to a week once your Tally data is exported and your masters are reviewed for duplicates. A full historical migration with bank reconciliation takes meaningfully longer — usually two to four weeks depending on transaction volume and how many years of history are involved — because the bank-transaction-to-invoice mapping is manual verification work, not a bulk import.
Do you also offer a direct CRM-to-Tally bridge instead of moving to Books?
Yes. If your accounts team is staying on Tally rather than moving to Zoho Books, we can connect Zoho CRM directly to Tally instead — see our Zoho CRM and Zoho Books integration page, which covers this option for teams not migrating off Tally at all.
Figure Out the Right Scope Before You Migrate
Tell us how many years of Tally data you have and why you think you need it in Zoho Books, and we will tell you honestly whether you do — before quoting anything.
Starts a 30-day Zoho trial and registers Skynetiks as your partner of record. Zoho sets the price either way — a partner cannot mark it up — and you can change partner later.
